WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM
Jaigarh had always known the value of water. The fort features one of the most sophisticated and sustainable water conservation systems of its time. Designed to support thousands of soldiers for years, Jaigarh’s network of canals, aqueducts, and tanks extends over 4 km beyond the fort walls.
Its largest open reservoir, Nathawaton ka Tanka, was built to catch rainwater from the surrounding hills. Channels fed this tank directly, filtering the water through a series of cleverly placed small tanks that captured sand, stones, and other dirt particles to ensure only clean water reached the main tanks.
That being said, there are five main storage tanks inside the fort, some covered with arched roofs to reduce evaporation. Jaigarh is, in fact, the only known fort in India to feature such an advanced, self-sustaining water management system.
